Salamanca lies almost completely on the Allegany Indian Reservation.  It is the only city, east of the Mississippi River, located on an Indian Reservation. Salamanca leases the land from the Seneca Nation of Indians.  The current land lease is in effect through 2030. The Seneca Nation of Indians is one of the six tribes of the Iroquois Confederacy. The city originated at the junction of four railroads in the southwestern corner of New York State. Salamanca lies on the Allegany River and shares its southern border with the Allegany State Park.

The Salamanca Youth Bureau plays a vital role in the daily workings of the city.  Monthly Youth Bureau activities are located on the Salamanca Municipal Website under the Community Services side tab. The Salamanca School District is Home of the Warriors.  The District consists of two elementary schools, Prospect and Seneca, and one high school, Salamanca Central School. REAP, the Rural Enterprise Association of Proprietors, sponsors the Salamanca City Farmer's market that runs from June through October.
