Action for Healthy Kids: School Grants for Healthy KidsThrough partners such as Kellogg's and the Walmart Foundation, Action for Healthy Kids is pleased to release its School Grants for Healthy Kids opportunities for the 2012-2013 school year. Over 500 schools will be awarded funds that will range from $1,000 to $5,000 (average $2,000) with significant in-kind contributions from Action for Healthy Kids in the form of people, programs, and school nutrition expertise. Award amounts will be based on building enrollment, project type, potential impact, and a school's ability to mobilize parents and students around school wellness initiatives. Schools must participate in the National School Lunch Program and National School Breakfast Program; and must have a free/reduced priced meal eligibility greater than 50% to be eligible. SAMHSA $300,000 Wellness Initiative "Million Hearts" Social Marketing Programs AwardsThe Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is accepting applications for its Wellness Initiatives "Million Hearts" social marketing programs for peer run/recovery community organizations awards. This program will enable consumer run and peer recovery community organizations to conduct community-based social marketing activities increasing awareness about the importance of heart health. These efforts include information and activities to prevent heart disease and stroke among adults with behavioral health challenges, as well as promote the long-term goal of helping them to achieve an overall state of wellness.For more information, please contact Carol Bloomberg (Carol_Bloomberg@abtassoc.com). Community Economic Development (CED) ProjectsThe Department of Health and Human Services just announced a funding announcement for Healthy Food Financing Initiative projects designed to improve access to healthy food. The Community Economic Development program (CED) will provide up to $10 million of funding to Community Development Corporations (CDCs) for projects located in food deserts and designed to improve access to healthy, affordable foods. AHA/RWJF: Childhood Obesity Rapid Response FundThe Childhood Obesity Rapid Response Fund, administered by the American Heart Association and supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, provides funding opportunities to ongoing state, local, and tribal public policy change efforts on childhood obesity. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and range from about $5,000 to $75,000. The primary goal of the Fund is to support promising ongoing public policy change campaigns. Tobacco Regulation Awareness, Communication, and Education ProgramThe goal of the Tobacco Regulation Awareness, Communication, and Education Program is to educate Americans about the risks of tobacco products. It seeks to increase capacity at the community level in the areas of health communication and education that address federal tobacco regulations and the public health goals of the Tobacco Control Act. The Program will help increase knowledge and encourage long term behavior change which will contribute to reductions in the morbidity and mortality associated with tobacco use in the U.S. Click here for more information. Healthy Eating Research: Building Evidence to Prevent Childhood ObesityHealthy Eating Research: Building Evidence to Prevent Childhood Obesity is a national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF). The program supports research on environmental and policy strategies with strong potential to promote healthy eating among children to prevent childhood obesity, especially among lower-income and racial and ethnic populations at highest risk for obesity. Findings are expected to advance RWJF's efforts to reverse the childhood obesity epidemic by 2015. This call for proposals (CFP) is for two types of awards aimed at providing key decision- and policy-makers with evidence to reverse the childhood obesity epidemic by 2015. Cardiovascular Risk Reduction in Underserved Rural CommunitiesThe overall objective is to build the evidence base and accelerate the implementation and translation of evidence- or practice-based interventions into practice in rural communities. To accomplish this objective, NHLBI invites applications that will plan and execute well-designed controlled trials that maximize the opportunities available in rural communities to reduce cardiovascular disease risk factors. The long-term goal is to foster sustainable interventions and scientific research that will lead to reduced cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in high-risk rural populations. Children's Health and Wellness GrantSponsored by the Build-A-Bear Workshop Foundation, the purpose of this funding is to provide direct support for children in the areas of health and wellness such as childhood disease research foundations, child safety organizations and organizations that serve children with special needs. Previous winners include Adoptions Together, Children's Miracle Network Hospitals of CoxHealth, Mississippi Food Network, The Center for Grieving Children, and Youth Emergency Services and Shelter. Multiple grants of $5,000 will be awarded to select applicants. Nonprofit organizations in the U.S. and Canada are eligible to apply.Deadline:August 31, 2012. Click here for more information. Roadmaps to Health: Community GrantsThe County Health Roadmaps project includes several efforts to—using the County Health Rankings model—support local communities, national partners and leaders across all sectors to improve health. This second call for proposals of the Roadmaps to Health Community Grants will support collaborations of partners implementing policy or system changes to address one of the social or economic factors that, as defined by the County Health Rankings, most strongly influence health outcomes in their community. These include: education; employment and income; family and social support; and community safety. Up to 20 grants of up to $200,000 each will be awarded through this solicitation. Planning Grants NOFAThe FY 20102 Choice Neighborhoods Planning Grants Notice of Funds Availability (NOFA) was issued on February 29, 2012 and announced approximately $5 million available for awards. Eligible applicants are public housing authorities (PHAs), local governments, nonprofits, tribal entities and for-profit developers that apply jointly with a public entity. Applications must propose to plan for the revitalization of a severely distressed public and/or HUD-assisted multifamily housing project located in a distressed neighborhood into a viable, mixed-income community.
