Located only minutes west of St. Louis County, the City of O'Fallon encompasses nearly 30 square miles with ideal access to I-70 in the north and I-64 in the south. Established in 1856, O'Fallon is the seventh largest city in Missouri and the largest in St. Charles County, with a growing population of 76,884 residents. While rich in history, the city today offers the latest in housing, business, retail, and leisure. The major employers of the City of O'Fallon are Citi Group, Mastercard, and Progress West Hospital.
The median income is $50,001 to $75,000 per year and the unemployment rate is very low. Although most citizens do have a higher level of education, the primary area of concern in O'Fallon is obesity and chronic disease due to lack of physical activity. As a city, O’Fallon has grown so quickly that elements like complete streets, trails, paths, and active parks that link to subdivisions and businesses have been ignored. Now as the issue of physical activity has grown in importance, it is necessary to reassess the city and determine best how to incorporate these elements. The ACHIEVE project will include the mapping of areas in the community that do not have sidewalks or where sidewalks have not been maintained, researching complete street guidelines through the National Complete Streets Coalition (www.completestreets.org) and policies set by successful complete streets communities, and comparing successful practices to O’Fallon’s policies and current practices.
