Community Vision/Mission

MISSION STATEMENT:

 

Jumpstart Jackson is a collaborative initiative of community agencies and entities dedicated to improving the health, wellness, and nutritional and physical wellbeing of Jackson-Madison County residents of all ages; through educational, recreational and improved infrastructural opportunities.

 

Activities

Our Successes

Community-wide Wellness Walks through Jackson and its parks to inspire residents to “Get up!  Get out! and Get Active!”   More than 2,000 have participated. 

 

Summer Youth Fitness Coalition

A partnership of Parks & Recreation, YMCA, Boys & Girls Clubs, and faith-based summer day camp operators to bring regular fitness, nutrition and wellness programs to youth during the summer.  Over 1,200 children participate in the program.

 

 

City-Wide Summer Youth Olympics Day event is held to wrap up the Summer Youth Fitness program.

 

Performance Kids…an after-school program to inspire kids to make healthy choices in their diets and exercise routines is yielding positive results. 

 

One of Jackson’s elementary schools, South Elem., was featured as one of the top ten ‘Healthiest Schools in America’ in Health magazine.

 

Jackson Community Gardens Project has begun to transform abandoned vacant lots in the inner city into fresh produce-producing gardens.  A downtown Farmer’s Market, operated by Jackson Recreation & Parks, now adds to the availability of fresh fruits & vegetables in the community.

 

Jackson-Madison County Wellness Policy officially adopted in 2010 by the Jackson City Council, the Madison County Commission, and the Jackson-Madison County School Board to define the long-range plans for health and wellness in the community.

 

“Walk With Me Tennessee” pilot city.  Jackson has been selected as one of the TN Pilot Communities for the Dept. of Environment & Conservation’s walkability program.

 

Reducing Childhood Obesity with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the National League of Cities, the Institute for Youth, Education, & Families, and the American Assn. Of School Administrators.  Jackson was one of six cities nationwide to be featured in the recent publication; “Community Wellness: Comprehensive City-School Strategies To Reduce Childhood Obesity”.
