Community Vision/Mission

The Davenport ACHIEVE project has the following goals: (1) “step up to health” by beautifying workplace stairwells to encourage use, (2) make parks and trails smokefree, (3) increase distance mapping and signage in parks and trails, (4) enhance student wellness policies in schools, and (5) identify on a map what playground equipment is applicable for specific age groups.

Davenport, Iowa is an urban community of 64.9 square miles.  It has a population of 98,359 residents, with a median household income between $35,000 and $49,999 per year.  Fifteen to 19 percent of residents do not have a high school diploma or GED, 10 to 14 percent of residents live below the poverty level, and five to nine percent of residents are unemployed.  Davenport has 25,767 residents between the ages of birth and eighteen.  The top five leading causes of death in Davenport are  heart disease (26.6%), cancer (23.0%), other conditions (19.7%), stroke (7.8%), and chronic lung/respiratory disease (6.3%).

The racial/ethnic breakdown of Davenport is 85 percent Caucasian, 6 percent African American, 5 percent Hispanic/Latino, 2 percent Asian American/Pacific Islander, and 2 percent Other. Thirty-seven percent of adults and 14 percent of youth are considered obese.
